My family hails from Nalagarh, a small town in the state of (H.P.) in India. My father, in the early part of his life, moved to Shimla (the official capital of the British Raj at the time) for better opportunities. He started his business as a textile merchant. That’s where I was born. Shimla is more like an urban area. The British called Shimla their summer palace.
After finishing high school in Shimla, my family moved to New Delhi (present capital of India). Here, I pursued my further education, where I graduated in 1966 from Delhi University, and soon after, I had plans to move abroad for further studies. I was very determined to go to the UK with a view to earn and learn.

Despite coming from a middle-class family, pursuing my dreams was challenging. My mother supported me financially for my air ticket, while my father helped secure a passport, which was difficult at the time. In 1966, I arrived in the UK with little money, braving the cold and uncertainty. My early years were tough, but I worked during holidays and weekends to fund my studies. This experience taught me resilience and determination, shaping my ability to overcome difficult situations and succeed.
